KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) is proposing that the government establish a specific bank to provide financing for the private sector to develop new tourism attractions.

A memorandum, consisting 10 suggestions, was recently presented to Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) director-general Datuk Musa Yusof to be discussed with relevant government agencies.

“MCCC leaders expressed that specific banks such as Agro Bank, SME Bank and EXIM Bank were set up to provide financing to relevant industries, however, the tourism industry, the third largest pillar of the economy, did not have a special bank to support its development,” it said in a statement.

MCCC vice-president Kerk Loong Sing suggested that the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) emulate Thailand’s attractive tourism ideas such as setting up resorts for overseas senior citizens.

“MOTAC should review current policies as the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand had already reached 10 million while Malaysia is still discussing how to attract three million Chinese tourists” he said.

In the memorandum, MCCC called on MOTAC to strive for visa-free implementation or to simplify the entry permit procedures and consider extending the residence period so as to attract more elderly tourists.

MCCC also suggested that MOTAC consider cooperating with the private sector to implement plans like “Malaysia My Summer Home” to attract elderly tourists to spend and enjoy their retirement life in Malaysia.
