KUALA LUMPUR: City police are planning to build eight beat bases at major tourist spots in the nation’s federal and administrative capitals in order to maximise security in these areas.
Among the places which have been identified are Tugu Negara, Dataran Merdeka, Bukit Bintang, the Petronas Twin Towers and Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said these beat bases would help increase the “omnipresence factor” and, indirectly, bring down the crime rate.
“We have already identified these five locations. The list of locations will be finalised soon as we plan for these beat bases to be in operation by the beginning of next year.
“The process of identifying the locations was based on their backgrounds, those which were categorised as hot spots, as well as via discussions with tourism associations and tour agencies.
“Each beat base will be manned by one or two policemen. These policemen will also have to go on crime prevention rounds and will have specific phone numbers so they can be contacted at all times.”
Mazlan was speaking to reporters after leading a High Profile Policing programme at the Integrated , where senior police are required to be present at the Southern Integrated Terminal.
On another matter, Mazlan advised city dwellers to always be on the alert, especially during the holiday season, so that they do not end up being the victims of crime.
“Minimise opportunities for criminals to make you their victim. Take all necessary precautions and be aware of your safety and that of your possessions.
“We encourage the public to use the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application to inform police if they are not going to be at home during this Deepavali celebration.”
