BEIJING: Malaysia and China have set 2020 as the Year of Culture and Tourism between the two countries to promote greater people-to-people contact and sustainable socio-economic growth.
In a joint statement issued yesterday, both governments expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s five-day visit to China, which ends today.
“The leaders of both nations recalled the history of friendly exchanges, charted the course for future development and had an in-depth exchange of views on regional and international issues of common interest in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.
“China and Malaysia are optimistic about the prospect of their bilateral relations,” the statement said.
It said Malaysia would continue to actively participate in the Belt and Road Initiative while continuing to push forward cooperation on the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park and Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park.
“Both sides welcomed the investments in each other’s country, encouraged collaboration and technology transfer in high-value investment segments such as ICT, data analytics, design and development, Internet of things, cloud computing and artificial intelligence,” it added.
The two countries would also strive to promote various sectors, including small and medium enterprises, trade, tourism, agriculture, livestock and fishery, among others.
Dr Mahathir, in expressing his appreciation for the warm hospitality accorded to him in China, has invited Premier Li Keqiang to visit Malaysia. Li accepted the invitation.
